December 5 (6.0 clock hours) CLINICAL/ADVANCED Level:
"Chemical Dependency Treatment in the New Millennium"
Presented by Dr. Evelyn A. Irving, LCSW
Holiday Inn Viking Southwest, 10709 Watson Road, St. Louis
Treating an illness of uncertain origin in a culture where millions have been diagnosed as addicted to drugs and/or alcohol, and where millions more suffer the side effects of living and working among those with this deadly disease, demands that we continuously hone our skills as professionals to effectively assess and intervene. We know a great deal about these disorders, but the AMA, the WHO and other DSM-IV researchers continue to discover that what worked yesterday does not work today; what works with one culture does not work with another; what works best with women does not necessarily work with men.
Participants in this workshop will:
Learn best practices for working with ethnic, culture and gender specific issues
Examine the ethical challenges confronted by those working in multidisciplinary team treatment centers or independent practices
Improve assessment skills
Recognize early warning signs when working with children and adolescents
Increase understanding of co-dependency and children of addiction when working with families
Know when to discontinue treatment or when to refer

December 5 (6.0 clock hours) CLINICAL/ADVANCED Level:
"Psychopharmacology for the Non-Medically Trained"
Presented by Sophia Dziegielewski, PhD., LCSW
Holiday Inn Viking Southwest, 10709 Watson Road, St. Louis
In today’s era of managed behavioral health care, mental health professionals are called upon to consult on medication treatment or recommend what medications would best serve as adjuncts to therapy. Medically trained or not, all mental health professionals need to know as much as possible about psychopharmacologic medications from dosage and side effects to drug-drug interactions and other special considerations in order to provide effective and
accountable treatment. Emphasizing the importance of making medications available to
consumers in conjunction with the most effective counseling interventions, Dziegielewski establishes the context for the therapeutic use of psychotropic drugs in the culture of today’s mental health treatments, examines the danger of the “quick fix” mentality into which
consumers and clinicians are tempted to fall, and focuses on the medications themselves.
Educational Objectives and Outcomes :
Overview of psychotropic drugs, including uses, misuses and how they work
Side effects and adverse reactions, and how to tailor treatment for clients who are
taking antipsychotics, antidepressants, and other commonly prescribed medications
Alternative herbal remedies and drug therapies for younger and older clients
